The Sacred Plant Medicine

The Gift of the Cacao Bean
The Criollo cacao bean is more than just a product—it’s a connection to the origins of cacao itself. Known as one of the rarest and most prized varieties, Criollo is celebrated for its exceptional flavour, delicate profile, and historical significance. Grown in select regions with deep-rooted cacao traditions, this bean carries the heritage of ancient civilizations that revered cacao as a sacred gift.
Unique Variety: Criollo cacao is often called the “prince of cocoa” due to its rarity and unparalleled quality. Unlike other varieties, Criollo has lower bitterness and acidity, making it naturally smooth and aromatic with subtle notes of fruit, nuts, and caramel.
Quality of the Soil: Criollo thrives in nutrient-rich, well-drained soils found in traditional cacao-growing regions. These ideal conditions, combined with careful cultivation, result in beans that offer a deeply complex and refined chocolate experience.
Fermentation Process: Criollo beans undergo a meticulous fermentation process lasting 48 to 72 hours. This crucial step enhances their nuanced flavour profile, bringing out natural sweetness and floral undertones while reducing bitterness.
Cultural Significance: Criollo cacao is a link to history, grown in regions where ancient cultures once used it in sacred rituals and as a form of currency. Today, dedicated farmers continue to cultivate these precious beans using sustainable and ethical practices, preserving both tradition and biodiversity.

My Love for Cacao
My journey with the plant medicine of Cacao began five years ago when I bought my first 100g bag, not realising the profound impact it would have on my life. Struggling with hormonal imbalances, which often affected my mood, I started drinking Cacao two days before my monthly circle. I quickly noticed how much calmer and more balanced I felt during those days compared to the anger and impatience I had experienced for most of my life.
Over time, I experimented with different doses and varieties, using Cacao during my cycle and in high-stress moments—especially important as a neurodivergent mum of three and a visionary psychic with a constantly busy mind. Cacao's calming effects, combined with its nutritional richness and Theobromine, a natural compound that supports mood and focus, have truly transformed my self-care rituals.

A Rich History
Cacao has a rich history dating back thousands of years, originating in ancient Mesoamerican cultures. The Olmecs, believed to be the first civilization to discover cacao around 1500 BCE, used it in rituals and as a beverage, often mixed with spices for sacred ceremonies. The Maya and Aztecs later embraced cacao, considering it a divine gift. Highly valued, cacao beans served as currency and were offerings to gods during elaborate rituals.
Cacao played a significant role in social practices; the Mayans created a frothy drink called “xocolatl,” believed to have invigorating properties. For the Aztecs, cacao was linked to the god Quetzalcoatl and consumed by nobility and warriors before battles. When Spanish colonizers brought cacao to Europe in the 16th century, it transformed into the sweetened chocolate beverages we know today.
Today, cacao remains intertwined with various cultures, especially in Central and South America, celebrated in festivals and rituals. Modern ceremonial cacao facilitates connection, introspection, and heart-opening experiences, reflecting its ancient roots while embracing contemporary practices. It is revered not only as a delicious treat but also as a potent symbol of community, love, and spiritual nourishment.
